Borussia Monchengladbach were held to a 0-0 draw at home by SV Hamburg today.

Four days ahead of facing Celtic in the Champions League Andre Schubert’s side were unable to find a way past the defence of the club sitting in second bottom place in the Bundesliga and collecting just their second point from seven matches.

The draw comes on the back of a 4-0 defeat away to third bottom Schalke 04 and leaves Gladbach sitting in eighth place with 11 points from seven matches. After playing Celti Gladbach are away to league leaders Bayern Munich.

Celtic go into Wednesday’s match with a one point lead over their German opponents with matches between the two clubs expected to decide who will finish in third place and pick up a Europa League spot.

In their opening match Gladback were easily beaten 4-1 by Manchester City after the match had been delayed 24 hours due to a downpour in Manchester.

While Celtic enjoyed a 3-3 thriller with Pep Guardiola’s side Gladbach suffered the agony of seeing a 1-0 lead against Barcelona overturned.

Commenting on the defeat on UEFA.com Gladbach reporter Matthew Howarth said: “Two defeats from two group fixtures does not make for pleasant reading if you are of a Gladbach persuasion, yet once the disappointment dies down the Borussia fans can look back on a highly impressive effort from the Foals.

This was by no means the backs-against-the-wall affair many were expecting, though the loss means their side simply have to beat Celtic next month to stand any chance of making it out of the group.”
