Chris Sutton believes that Martin O’Neill’s Celtic side would have been top four material in the Premier League.

The outspoken striker starred at Ewood Park and Anfield as Celtic delivered victories on English territory to take them to the UEFA Cup Final in Seville. Two years later Liverpool won the Champions League.

Celtic’s midweek draw with Manchester City reopened an old debate with Brendan Rodgers claiming that English clubs are too scared to invite Celtic into their broadcasting fuelled cartel.

With the Premier League effectively a worldwide selection where English players are a rarity it’s unrealistic to expect the current Celtic side to challenge for the title over 38 games but Sutton is in no doubt about where his old team-mates stand.

I always felt my Celtic side would have finished in the top four in England but the game has changed in the last decade and the financial gap has widened,” he claimed in the Daily Record.

But there’s no doubt with the same resources as the rest down south my old club would prosper.

That’s why it’s not going to happen which is also why we should enjoy results like the one on Wednesday night. I know that Celtic fans will be getting excited but the task in hand is still incredibly tough.

They might expect their side to beat Borussia Monchengladbach in a few weeks but it won’t be that straight forward. At least Celtic are in there and showing they belong in the Champions League.”
