Chris Sutton’s in-yer-face style of punditry has earned him a deal from the London based Daily Mail.

The former Celtic striker has developed into one of the most sought after voices in the game as he calls the shots without fear or favour.

That style has certainly rubbed some people up the wrong way but his outspoken views, enthusiasm and ability to back up his views have earned him a role at the Daily Mail.

Gareth Southgate’s decision to drop Rooney from the England team has been front and back page news with the out of touch Manchester United captain taking criticism from all angles.

Roy Hodgson, Sam Allerdyce and Southgate have all had to justify their faith in Rooney with Sutton in no doubt that the new England boss has made the right call.

Absolutely,” Sutton replied when asked if Southgate had made the right decision. “There are better players than him in every position, and it’s as simple as that.

Rooney is a versatile player but this is England and it’s about earning the right. His recent form has not been good enough to earn a starting place.”

Within Scotland Sutton’s views have made a refreshing change in an industry full of former pro’s fearful of saying anything that goes against the grain.

Only former Hearts midfielder Michael Stewart expresses himself as directly as Sutton with the profile of the former Celtic striker carrying more clout.

Sutton was an outspoken critic of Ronny Deila during his two years at Celtic with many hoops fans dismayed to see their manager under attack from a former player.

That ability to go with his instinct and justify his views has seen Sutton turn on fellow pundits Derek Johnstone and Steven Craigen.

After starting out his media career with the Daily Record and BT Sport Sutton’s elevation to working for the BBC and the Daily Mail suggests that he has found a winning formula.
