Mark Warburton is a shock candidate to take over as manager of Championship strugglers Watford.

The former city trader is third favourite with the bookies to replace Gary Caldwell with both The Sun and the Daily Mail running with the story.

Warbo was priced up to replace Sam Allerdyce as the next England boss but taking charge of Wigan seems a more realistic prospect.

Former MK Dons boss Karl Robinson is the bookies favourite, followed by Ryan Giggs, but an escape from the troubles at Ibrox would be very appealing for the former Brentford boss.

Recently Warbo has grown increasingly agitated at the media coverage that his team receives and even claimed that the defeat at Aberdeen resulted in 20 pages of coverage from one newspaper!

Last season Warbo got prickly when he was linked with the manager’s job at Fulham but since the new year there has been little interest in his services.

After losing the final of the Scottish Cup to Hibs Warbo didn’t get a sniff of a job in the summer with Alan Stubbs picking up the manager’s role at Rotherham.

If Wigan were to firm up their interest in the Ibrox boss it’s likely that a nominal fee will be required to release him from his contract.

After romping to the Championship last season life among full-time teams in the top tier has proved much tougher for Warbo.

His summer signings have made no impact on the side with reports of unrest in the boardroom about the money spent and the handling of the Joey Barton suspension.
