Former Rangers defender Alan Hutton has walked out on Scotland ahead of their World Cup qualifier with England.

The out of favour Aston Villa defender has barely been able to get a game at club level while Strachan has taken him into the SFA Hall of Fame with 50 caps.

Hutton called off injured from the last batch of internationals and told Strachan that he is no longer prepared to turn out for his country.

Alan Hutton has taken himself out of the frame to be an international player,” the Scotland boss explained. “He didn’t come to the squad the last time as he was injured.

He’s maybe in a position now where he’s thinking: ‘How long is that? Ten years, have I done enough?’ We respect everyone’s decision.”

Strachan added: “At this moment in time he doesn’t want to be in the frame to be selected.

I spoke to him a couple of times. You just speak, I’m no psycho-analyst, I didn’t want to get that deep into it.”

With Hutton ruling himself out of contention Strachan is faced with the terrifying prospect of going to Wembley with Callum Paterson and Lee Wallace as full-backs!

Neither player has impressed in the SPFL with Waldo struggling after four seasons in the lower divisions playing against bricklayers and postmen.

Paterson is in his second season in the top flight after being converted from playing at striker into a full-back.

Forty years ago Ally MacLeod and Willie Ormand used to relocate Danny McGrain to left-back to accommodate Sandy Jardine in the Scotland side- a sobering thought for Strachan as he prepares for Friday’s showdown.
