Warbo confirms there is no January warchest

Mark Warburton has confirmed the worst kept secret in football- he hasn’t got a button to spend in the January transfer window.

After bringing in 11 new stars to add to last season’s Scottish Cup runners-up squad the former city trader was hoping for another raid on the bargain buckets of the transfer market.

Dave King publicly humiliated Warbs at the club’s AGM by refusing to fund any new aces and starlets.

With a going concern warning in their accounts, an emergency loan scheduled for March and further expensive legal battles the same month every rand is a prisoner these days at Ibrox.

Explaining why he won’t be buying anyone the Sporting Life reported Warbo saying: “January is notoriously difficult because clubs don’t want to lose their best players and if you do sign someone, you end up paying more than they are actually worth.

“So I’d imagine one or two loans is the best option for us in January with a view to whatever happens in the summer.

“The midfield is an area that is well documented [that Rangers need to strengthen]. We lost Niko Kranjcar to a long-term injury so we’re looking for an attacking midfielder if one becomes available but they have to add quality to the squad.

“We are close. We are doing the work we have to do but until the player signs on the dotted line, you have to man mark them almost to get it over the line because there are more clubs fishing in a smaller pond for players.

“We are making progress I hope and we’ll soon find out.”

Should any clubs come in with a bid for Martyn Waghorn or James Tavernier that stretches into six figures it’s unlikely that they’ll find Sevco difficult to deal with.

While Aberdeen, Hearts and the rest of Scottish football operate within UEFA’s Financial Fair Play rules it seems that the club from Ibrox can outspend their income and get by on soft loans with no lessons learned by the football authorities from the administration and liquidation of Rangers FC.
