Celtic have rejected an approach from Chelsea for Craig Gordon.

According to a report in The Sun the London club are trying to tie up a back up keeper to allow them to flog Asmir Begovic to Bournemouth for £12m.

Gordon is contracted to Celtic until the end of the season but the club does have the option to extend that by 12 months.

While Chelsea may think that they can throw their weight around in most transfer matters they won’t get the former Sunderland keeper and bank a significant profit from a quick player exchange.

Any attempts by Chelsea to sweeten a deal by offering some of their surplus players on loan will be politely rejected with the hoops not in need of a short term fix from an Islam Feruz type player.

Brendan Rodgers has spoken out his admiration for Gordon with the onus now on the club to come up with a two and a half year contract in line with a 34-year-old who attracts offers from the club at the top of the most hyped and overpaid league in the world

The former Hearts keeper seems wiser and more appreciative than most players- he has looked into a future that involved no longer being able to play football.

Every contract carries risk but getting Gordon onto a new deal looks like money well invested bringing a level of stability to a crucial position.
