Patrick Roberts has no idea what next season will bring.

The 19-year-old’s loan deal with Celtic will end in the summer with the next stage in his career to be decided by Manchester City.

Despite his Champions League goal at the Etihad in December it’s highly unlikely that he’ll be returning to that stadium next season.

As Pep Guardiola prepares for another multi-million pound spending spree it’s difficult to see a pathway for Roberts or any other younger players at City.

Tellingly Roberts hasn’t heard a word from Pep since the City boss was forced into a few comments after the Champions League clash.

I haven’t thought about next year at all,” Roberts admitted to The Sun. “I will think about it when it comes

The gaffer here has been great, and has expressed to me how he likes me as a player.

It is good for me to know he believes in me. I haven’t spoken to Pep or anyone. I had a few texts after I scored against them. I am part of City and they want me to do well.”

After 18 months at Celtic Roberts would be a relatively risk free signing and one certainly ready to play at Champions League level.

The headline figure on his City transfer fee was £12m from Fulham but perhaps half of that is performance related.

If Celtic can negotiate a permanent deal that splits any future transfer fee equally between both clubs then an agreeable solution could be found that suits all parties.
