Scott Brown’s big decision

Brendan Rodgers fears the damage that June 10 could do to Celtic’s Champions League hopes.

That night Scotland take on England in a World Cup qualifier that is likely to be of academic interest only to the home side.

The problem for Rodgers comes 10 days later when he brings his Celtic squad together for pre-season training and the process of qualifying for the group phase of the Champions League.

Craig Gordon, Kieran Tierney, James Forrest, Leigh Griffiths and Stuart Armstrong are all likely to be involved with Scott Brown still to announce whether or not he will be extending his international career.

After retiring from international football in the summer the Celtic skipper returned for the 3-0 defeat from England in November.

As he weighs up whether that was a one-off or not his club manager suspects that the prospect of a three or four week break before resuming training will see Brown call a halt on his Scotland career.

For players it’s not great,” Rodgers told The Sun looking at the June 10 World Cup qualifier. “Some who don’t make the cup final might finish a bit before that but they’ve got to kick on again. So it’s not a good date at all.

If you look at June right the way through there’s not a free date. Look at the UEFA games, it’s all blocked out for games across Europe.

That comes into consideration for a senior player. If you are 17, 18, 19, you’ll play all the time.”

Recalling Steven Gerrard’s decision to quit England Rodgers added: “I think we all understood the reasons why Scott came back to play in the England game.

Going forward, he’s got some big decisions to make. I think he’s clear in his own mind how he sees it evolving.

My worry is for Celtic and I want to make sure he’s the best he can possibly be for Celtic.

We’ve talked. I think he’s pretty clear on where I see him at, and I’ve had experiences of these types of situations. I remember it with Steven as well.

It has to be right for him, in order to play the game at the level he wants to be at. He’s in a different stage of his life now. He knows that.

Of course I can give him my feelings on it but he will speak to Gordon. He only wants what’s best for Scotland, but he also has to have a look out for himself. I’m sure he’ll make the decision in time.”
