Thomson pleads to stop Celtic

It seems that no one connected with Rangers (IL) has learned any lessons from the liquidation of the old club.

Almost five years on from the day the old club was placed in administration ‘spend to catch/stop Celtic’ seems to be the only thought that anyone can come up with.

Barrie McKay is the only young player to have lasted the journey from Division Three through to the top flight but it’s doubtful if he would raise more than £500,000 if sold.

Across the city Celtic are spending £2.8m on teenager Kouassi Eboue from Krasnodar, if the tribute act had tried a similar policy rather than boosting the bank balances of Jon Daly, Kris Boyd, Ian Black and Emilson Cribari they might have been able to hand Mark Warburton a decent transfer warchest. In almost five years trading the £400,000 received for Lewis MacLeod is the only transfer fee that the club has taken.

Warbo is left to scratch around for leftovers and misfits to come in on loan as the reality of six and seven in a row starts to filter through across the city.

Kevin Thomson enjoyed a team rammed full of EBT payments as Dave Murray cheated every team in Scotland and abroad by using players that the club couldn’t afford to pay.

As he studies a 19 point gap between the clubs and the fact that none of Warbo’s players would get on the Celtic bench Thomson wants to see the tribute act spend to stop the hoops- not realising the inevitable consequences of such as policy.

In an interview carried in The Sun the former Ibrox midfielder stated: “If you’re aligned to Rangers then everybody hates this word ‘gap’ but there IS a gap. It is there for everybody to see.

Celtic have better players than Rangers. That’s just the way it is, sadly. For Rangers to close that gap they need better players and better players cost money.

Have Mark Warburton and Davie Weir got the nous to pull out some wee gems — like a Josh Windass — to help bridge the gap?

If you’re going to keep on trying to go down that route then you’re gambling on a wee bit of luck or instinct to get the right players.

Even if there’s investment during this window and the next window — which I think is needed — it’s still going to be a difficult challenge.

I’ve said all along, if you’re second at the Old Firm, then you’re a failure.”

Murray was the ultimate ‘Old Firm failure’ picking up just £1 for the sale of a 138 year old institution- within 18 months they were in the liquidation mortuary.

With no one prepared to consider a solution that doesn’t involve spending money they don’t have to stop Celtic it’s only a matter of time before Sevco join Rangers in the mortuary.
