After highlighting the staggering gulf between the wage bill of Celtic and Sevco e last week Mark Warburton refused to discuss the champions elect after yesterday’s derby defeat.

The former city trader seemed to know every last detail of Celtic’s finances as he prepared his excuses ahead of a third consecutive derby defeat.

While Celtic had two re-arranged SPFL matches to fit in during December, plus a Champions League clash with Manchester City, Warbo had his squad in at Murray Park preparing to end Celtic’s unbeaten record.

Lessons were learned after the 5-1 defeat at Celtic Park in September, more were picked up at Hampden after a 1-0 defeat where apparently the gap was narrowed.

It was an ideal opening 20 minutes for Warbo as he dared to dream of a derby victory that might earn him an offer to manage in the English Championship.

Once Moussa Dembele, again, hit the back of the net reality kicked it with Warbo left to ponder the battle for second place with no new players coming in during the bleak January transfer window.

I’m not worried [about Celtic’s lead],” the Sporting Life website reported. “My only focus is on Rangers. We want to take this club as high as we possibly can, get European football and kick on again.

“I’m not going to sit and say it was great that we got closer. We lost.

“I hope the fans stick with us. We are second in the table, just got promoted last year and we are second but of course we want to go higher.”

Next up for Warbo is a Scottish Cup tie at home to Motherwell in three weeks time with less than 20,000 expected inside Ibrox.
