Brendan’s 4-2-3-1 to make McGhee rage

|

As if life wasn’t cruel enough to Mark McGhee the fixture list sends him to Celtic Park on Saturday.

After losing seven goals, getting sent to the stand and having your anger posted all over social media  the Motherwell boss has to take his side to a venue where they have lost 7-0, 5-0 and 2-0 in the last calendar year.

McGhee and Brendan Rodgers crossed paths at Reading before their careers headed off in vastly different directions. As the Scotland assistant fights a losing battle with anger management  Rodgers is in complete control of his club, team and players and pushing for a record breaking season.

Saturday’s match will have the home fans rolling up expecting another goal feast led by Moussa Dembele chasing a hat-trick of hat-tricks.

Rodgers will have a few team issues to mull over- the biggest being in central defence. Jozo Simunovic has recovered from a shoulder injury but will have to remove Dedryck Boyata or Erik Sviatchenko from the side.

On the bench Stuart Armstrong and Leigh Griffiths are expected to return but Patrick Roberts remains out injured along with Tom Rogic.

Post Lisbon, there has rarely been a better time to be a Celtic fan, almost everything seems to be progressing in the right direction led by a manager who cares but who is utterly ruthless.

It’s not been a good week so far for McGhee, as the manager of a side that once lost 9-0 to Celtic he’ll know that things could be a good deal worse by tea-time on Saturday.

CRAIG GORDON

The Scotland keeper has handled speculation about a move to Chelsea with ease and continued to turn in consistently impressive performances.

There were a couple of wobbles at home to Hearts that only the hypercritical would pick up on.

Despite the central defensive partnership regularly changing Gordon has retained his concentration and appears to be getting more confident and comfortable with Brendan Rodgers’ style of play.

MIKAEL LUSTIG

What more can be said about the dashing Swedish full-back?

How do you follow up a double rabona? With a run, touch and finish that Henrik or Zlatan would be proud of.

The pressure from Cristian Gamboa certainly seems to be having an effect with Lustig’s old attacking instincts returning without any impact on his defensive duties.

DEDRYCK BOYATA

Survived the own goal at St Johnstone to retain his place against Inverness Caley Thistle and has managed to break up the Sviatchenko & Simunovic partnership.

The turnaround since last year is incredible with the former Manchester City defender an imposing and composed presence in the Celtic side.

After one appearance in the first half of the season he’ll be anxious to hold onto his place in the side and get as many matches as possible.

ERIK SVIATCHENKO

Watching from the sidelines as Boyata re-emerged must have given the Dane a little jolt.

His attitude and commitment can never be questioned but there was a form slump during December.

With three competing for two places in central defence everyone will need to be at their best with no sign of the manager easing up despite the massive lead at the top of the table.

KIERAN TIERNEY

It’s brilliant to have him back, Emilio did well when he was in the side but there’s no genuine comparison between the two left-backs.

His relationship with Scott Sinclair is telepathic, instinctively when in possession they both know exactly what each other is looking for.

With a headed goal last week we might be seeing another aspect to Tierney’s game. He’s been unlucky around goal this season but could end up with half a dozen given a decent share of the breaks.

SCOTT BROWN

Another of last week’s goalscorers- he hardly needs a confidence boost.

Broony now has a team full of players with a similar attitude to himself which allows him to concentrate more on his own game.

Every aspect of his play has improved since last season with Celtic getting the full benefits, the big Scotland decision is still to be made.

NIR BITTON

After missing out on most of December he has taken his chance due to injuries to Stuart Armstrong and Tom Rogic.

There has been signs of his best form in recent matches but also areas that suggest that he’s not quite the type of holding midfielder that Rodgers is looking for.

With Armstrong returning from injury and Koassi Eboue on the horizon competition for his place is about to be stepped up.

JAMES FORREST

Was in stunning form against Inverness Caley Thistle and would have picked up the man-of-the-match if it hadn’t been for Moussa Dembele.

Rodgers faith has never wavered in the winger with Saturday’s performance explaining exactly why.

His powerful running, changes of direction and precision crossing makes him an essential part of the team.

LIAM HENDERSON

Is in a strange development stage in his career. He has skills that can’t be coached, managing and developing them is the key- the challenge.

At 20 years of age Rodgers has got a talent that he wants to work with and an attitude that is open to learning and developing.

With Rogic injured and Christie on loan at Aberdeen an unexpected opening has occurred for Henderson to put his stamp on the side.

SCOTT SINCLAIR

Took some ridiculous treatment last week with little more than token protection from the referee.

Despite that he is a massive influence on the team- bringing out the best in Kieran Tierney and Moussa Dembele.

It’s incredible to think that he was wasting away on the fringes of the Aston Villa team 12 months ago, since his debut goal at Tynecastle he has barely put a foot wrong and is on course to rival Dembele in the Player of the Year awards.

MOUSSA DEMBELE

Will he get his third hat-trick in successive matches? It would be a brave man to bet against the former Fulham striker heading home with a match ball.

After the transfer speculation and a minor injury knock he has roared back into the side and is clearly the man that brings everything together.

For a 20-year-old he shows incredible maturity and strength, what he’ll be doing in five years time is a frightening prospect for defenders to contend with.
