Ryan Bowman’s shocking tackle on Kieran Tierney

Kieran Tierney survived a horror challenge from Motherwell’s Ryan Bowman with just a gash on the side of his knee.

Similar to last week’s shocking challenge from Iain Vigurs on Scott Sinclair referee Don Robertson decided that the challenge was only worth a yellow card.

Thirty yards from the Motherwell goal, almost on the touchline, Tierney had his eye on the ball as Bowman came towards him.

The Motherwell man, without looking towards the ball, then put out a straight leg which thankfully struck Tierney on his non-standing leg. If Tierney’s leg had been on the ground he could well have been dealing with a career ending injury.

Robertson’s decision showed a complete disregard for the laws of the game and an appreciation for people that can actually play the game.

If challenges like Vigurs and Bowman are only punished by yellow cards it allows players to ‘take one for the team’ knowing that the worst they’ll see is a yellow card with the prospect of putting an opponent out the game.

Motherwell manager Mark McGhee is the assistant manager of Scotland.
