Jamie Walker taunted Sevco by telling them that Hearts should have scored five or six against them at Tynecastle.
With Dave King breathing down his neck Mark Warburton was desperate for a convincing win at Tynecastle to underline his credentials as one of the best emerging coaches in the business.
A win for Sevco and defeat for Aberdeen would have created some daylight in the battle for second place but Warbo’s carefully constructed plans were torn apart.
Hearts went into the match on the back of a 4-0 hammering from Celtic but coach Ian Cathro knew exactly how to exploit Warbo’s dodgy defence.
Walker scored twice with the midfielder’s only disappointment not being able to score more as their visitors- from Wes Foderingham to true blue Andy Halliday- had a nightmare.
“We scored four goals against a good Rangers side and we need to kick on now,” the two goal Jambo told The Sun.
“We could’ve scored five or six and I don’t think that would’ve flattered us.
“The group of players we have, we’ve got the quality and we just need to show it every week.
“There’s been frustration in recent weeks. But we’ve got a lot of quality in the dressing room and since the manager came in he’s tried to put his ideas across. It’s taken a bit of time but tonight it’s finally paid off.
Walker added: “I think the victory was for the fans too. They’ve been patient over the season, it’s been a tough ride since the gaffer came in.
“But nights like tonight make it worth it.
“We can still definitely catch Rangers and Aberdeen. Aberdeen lost tonight and we’ve got a few points on them. We just need to keep working hard and keep playing well.”
Aberdeen have home matches with Partick Thistle and Motherwell to move into second place while Warbo faces an afternoon of fun at home to Ross County on Saturday.
