International woe

Nir Bitton has laid out the frustrations of international football after another batch of bench watch.

The Celtic midfielder watched from the substitute bench on Friday night as Spain gave Israel the runaround in a 4-1 defeat.

It seemed the ideal fixture to get someone in the middle of the park to hold the ball up and also screen his defence but Israeli coach Elisha Levi thought otherwise.

Last season a disagreement between the player and coach looked like leading to an international exile but an uneasy peace deal has been brokered which seems to favour the coach more than the player.

In five qualifying matches Bitton has managed 147 minutes of action over two matches.

Looking at his situation he admitted: “There’s a lot I’d like to say about the situation, but I am professional and I will keep my thoughts to myself.

Every coach has an opinion about individual players and it’s up to Elisha Levi to think what he wants about each of us.

Why have I not played much in this campaign? I have no answer to that. You would have to ask Elisha Levi.”

As he returns to club duty at the weekend Bitton’s place in the Celtic side is under serious threat.

Callum McGregor partnered Scott Brown in the last match away to Dundee with the imminent return of Tom Rogic likely to see Stuart Armstrong moving back to a deeper position.
