BT Sport are hoping to agree an exclusive deal for SPFL football worth £31m a season.

Currently BT and Sky share coverage in a deal worth around £21m a year to show 60 live fixtures with the current deal running through until the end of the 2019/20 season.

While a 50% increase is welcome it is still dwarfed by the £1,733m/year that English football receives from Sky Sports and BT Sport.

Even if Scottish games only drawn in one tenth of the audience that English Premier League matches attract the Scottish game is still being badly undervalued with another EPL broadcast deal in place before the 2020/21 Scottish contract begins.

According to a report in the Daily Mail, BT Sport executives have been highlighting their contract for English rugby to convince SPFL chief executives of the value of their bid.

The report claims that match attendances in the Aviva Premiership have risen by 10% with viewing figures up 13%.

Most supporters prefer BT’s upbeat coverage of the Scottish game but even at £31m/year the Scottish game is being badly undersold.

A deal worth £50m/year with two live slots, say Friday evening and Saturday or Sunday tea-time, would be appreciated with Friday night matches only involving teams within 60 miles of each other to cut out some of the ridiculous distances fans are expected to travel.
