Alex McLeish has performed a remarkable u-turn after being snubbed by Sevco to take over as manager.

Less than two days after Mark Warburton was dismissed the former Scotland boss was on Sky Sports pleading for ‘someone to pick up the phone and call me’ as he admitted his willingness to manage at Ibrox.

The phone call finally came, it led to an interview but McLeish lost out to the fifth best coach in Qatar.

Shortly before Brother Pedro was appointed Ross Wilson knocked back the opportunity to become Director of Football at Ibrox, opting to stay with Southampton.

After a lengthy discussion about his ambitions to become a DoF McLeish went into some detail about his losing out to Brother Pedro.

I’m not touting myself for the Rangers director of football job,” he told the Daily Record after talking up his suitability for the top job.

That was never brought up when I met them, we just had a nice casual chat. If Rangers had given me the nod that they wanted me to come back I would have asked for a further meeting just to clear some things up.

It wasn’t a done deal if they had said, ‘You are the man we are going for’. There would have been further chat as well just to understand some parameters.”

McLeish’s last UK manager job was with Nottingham Forest which ended in February 2013, while managing at Ibrox he had £1.5m paid ‘tax free’ into an EBT.
