The penalty myth

It didn’t take long for some myths to start surfacing after Celtic’s 2-0 win over Sevco at Hampden on Sunday.

Seldom has there been such a routine win in a semi-final with all manner of statistics appearing to confirm the bhoys dominance.

Shortly after the final whistle blew the spin started to emerge with James Tavernier claiming not only that he got a touch on the ball but that Leigh Griffiths had confirmed to him that Celtic shouldn’t have had a penalty.

Griffiths dismissed that notion on twitter but the words of Tav added to Don Robertson being behind the goal has provided some comfort to the easily deluded that their team were in fact robbed of justice at Hampden.

Truth be told the leniency of Willie Collum spared them from further distress. In most countries Andy Halliday and Myles Beerman would have been red carded before half-time but it seems that Collum’s job was to manage the game as peacefully as possible.

Why no free kick was given when David Bates deliberately went straight through on Thomas Rogic 20 yards from goal in the closing stages is anyone’s guess.

Later on today we’ll find out who will be refereeing Saturday’s match at Ibrox, if the same leniency is shown it’ll be a minor miracle if Celtic complete the game without serious injury.
