Billy McNeill

|

Billy McNeill rejoined the Lisbon Lions yesterday as the City of Glasgow honoured it’s greatest ever sporting team.

A special dinner was held to honour the men who put the city on the football map back in 1967 following in the footsteps of Madrid, Milan and Lisbon.

Although born and brought up in Bellshill McNeill is very much a product of Glasgow and an iconic figure within the city.

Confirmation earlier this year of dementia meant that he would have a low key role in the 50th anniversary celebrations of the Lisbon Lions but his presence at the City Chambers somehow completed the picture.

McNeill suffered through some very barren and testing times through the early sixties and was probably on the brink of joining Paddy Crerand in quitting the club until the return of Jock Stein.

Together they worked brilliantly, each man knew the demands and capabilities of each other as they demonstrated brilliantly under the Portuguese sun 50 years ago.
