Brendan Rodgers has heaped praise on Leigh Griffiths for his performance in a Scotland shirt against England.

The striker has had to play second fiddle to Moussa Dembele for most of the season but retains the admiration of his club boss.

When the Frenchman was injured for the last month of the season Griffiths came in to lead the line and score a number of crucial goals.

The striker has had to win over Gordon Strachan but showed his quality at Hampden with a double strike that almost earned Scotland an unlikely victory.

Speaking to Celtic TV Rodgers said: “Before he had the free kicks I thought that he was outstanding, that was my take on the game. As someone that wants to develop players, I’m looking at his all round game.

Firstly he started to press at the top end of the field and that is very difficult for him because Scotland had slotted into a 5-4-1 when they didn’t have the ball but he was putting Smalling and Cahill under real pressure.

I thought that he pressed the game really well and with real intelligence. With the ball I thought that his hold up play was exceptional, he didn’t give away many balls, the quality of his first touch was very good. His link up play and overall game was very very good.

Then you know with Leigh Griffiths that whatever level he is playing at that from 25 yards in he is as good as you’ll see. He has this incredible knack.”

Rodgers added: “I bumped into Joe Hart on holiday and he commented on the quality of the free kicks and he has faced many top class players.

To do it at a game of that magnitude… the first one is Leigh all day with great swerve and bend, he was close earlier on in the game with a free kick.

To do it in quick succession, to get that composure, to do it on both sides of the goalkeeper. They were two goals that were worthy of winning the game.

It was unfortunate to conceded late on but his performance and the two goals were exceptional.

Griffiths will rejoin his club team-mates next week when Celtic fly out to Austria to step up their pre-season preparations.

After his performance against England there were reports that Newcastle and West Brom were interested in taking the striker to the Premier League.

Griffiths is under contract until 2021 and is just 15 away from completing a century of goals for Celtic with John Hartson the last player to hit that landmark.
