Celtic are close to agreeing a new contract with Stuart Armstrong.

The midfielder joined from Dundee United in February 2015 and became one of the most influential players in Brendan Rodgers treble winning side.

After starting the season outside of the starting XI Armstrong forced his way into the Celtic side and scored his 17th goal of the season when he equalised against Aberdeen in the final of the Scottish Cup at Hampden.

We had decided to leave it until the season was finished and then we would pick things up again,” Armstrong told The Sun about his contract talks.

I’m sure we will take care of that soon. You can never put a time limit on these things. This is the happiest I have been in my footballing career.

That has shown on the park, I am very happy and playing some of the best football of my life.”

John Kennedy recently described getting Armstrong signed up as one of the most important aspects of the close season.

While Armstrong is close to agreeing a new deal his former Dundee United team-mate Gary Mackay-Steven is in talks about joining Sheffield United.

Like Armstrong GMS is in the final 12 months of his contract but has failed to convince Rodgers that he is worth a new contract.

Tomorrow the SPFL will announce their fixtures for the new season tomorrow, on Monday the first and second rounds draws will take place for the qualifying rounds of the Champions League.
