Celtic’s worst ever transfer window

|

There are various thoughts on how many transfer windows it takes before you can judge a manager.

At the moment Brendan Rodgers is in the midst of his third window with barely a murmur of complaint as the squad looks forward confidently to a Champions League qualifying campaign with three domestic trophies in the boardroom.

Two years ago Rodgers’ predecessor Ronny Deila was at the same stage in his Celtic career but it was at this point that it all went wrong for the Norwegian.

There were real grounds for optimism at the time with only a horrendous decision from Steven McLean denying Celtic a likely treble.

During the January transfer window Gary Mackay-Steven and Stuart Armstrong were brought in with both making an instant impression while Europe had delivered a thrilling tie with Inter Milan to dampen out the memories of Maribor and Legia Warsaw.

A new contract had been set up for Kris Commons with the squad looking in good health even if Jason Denayer and John Guidetti had moved on.

Hopes were high for the transfer window but for a variety of reasons it all went badly wrong with a window of promise turning out to be the beginning of the end for Deila.

DEDRYCK BOYATA

He actually turned into the best of the summer 15 signings but not for Deila.

Brought in to replace Jason Denayer it never really happened for Boyata although the transfer of Virgil van Dijk never helped his case.

An injury in the Scottish Cup exit to Sevco was his last action under Deila, miraculously he reappeared under Brendan Rodgers in January 17 and played a leading role in delivering the treble.

SAIDY JANKO

What could go wrong with signing a Swiss youth internationalist from Manchester United?

Signing the full-back seemed a master-stroke but beyond the obvious athleticism there wasn’t much football ability to back things up.

He suffered a lengthy injury in his first season, after a disastrous night away to Hapoel Be’er Sheva he went on loan to Barnsley before signing for St Etienne last week.

NADIR CIFTCI

After the success of Mackay-Steven and Armstrong it seemed sensible to return to Tannadice to sign up Nadir Ciftci.

A six match domestic suspension didn’t help but it quickly became obvious that he wasn’t cut out for the lone striker role under Deila and spent the second half of the season on loan in Turkey.

With two years still to go on his contract there’s no chance of seeing the striker playing for Celtic again.

LOGAN BAILLY

Seemed a decent choice as back-up keeper to Craig Gordon with good experience from Belgium and Germany.

He seemed a little erratic in his rare appearances which were mainly on the artificial surfaces of Hamilton and Kilmarnock as Gordon was rested.

A pre-season injury under Brendan Rodgers saw the Irishman turn to Dorus de Vries as back up with Bailly relegated to third choice and about to complete a move back to Belgium this weekend.

TYLER BLACKETT

On the back of losing out to Malmo in the Champions League qualifier Blackett was brought in on loan from Manchester United- again what could go wrong.

He had played first team football under Louis van Gaal and was expected to offer cover in central defence and at left-back to Emilio Izaguirre.

Before Christmas he had dropped out of the picture, Tierney was getting better on a weekly basis with Blackett finding his level last season at Reading.

SCOTT ALLAN

The biggest mystery of all- gleefully snatched from Hibs after a long running bid from Sevco to take him to Ibrox on the cheap.

Liam Henderson’s loan deal to Hibs seems to have been the most successful part of this bizarre transfer deal.

Allan had some great games in the Development League but first team chances were fleeting with most fans suspecting that Deila wasn’t behind the transfer.

After a season on loan at Rotherham he’ll be hoping for better luck this season at Dundee with his contract running until June 2019.
