Davie Provan believes that Windsor Park should have been flattened rather than rebuilt with Government money.

The symbol of loyalist ‘supremacy’ has been cherished by the Belfast football authorities and bankrolled by the tax payers while grounds across the six counties struggle to maintain themselves.

Providing Linfield with the finest stadium in the north east that was bought and built by the taxpayer and fans of every other club in their area gives them another in-built advantage.

The fans treated to those privileges showed their true colours when Celtic visited earlier this month with racism added to the cocktail generated by the ground that forced Belfast Celtic to close down and ended Neil Lennon’s international career.

Writing in The Sun Provan didn’t pull any punches about the set up, he said: “By tying that scarf to the Windsor Park goalposts, Leigh Griffiths again proved he’s not the brightest. In that environment, it was idiotic but the behaviour of Linfield fans was much worse, with coins and a bottle thrown at Griff.

This is the ground where Neil Lennon was hounded by Northern Ireland punters and Shota Arveladze booed by his own supporters for daring to bless himself.

Three years ago, £30million was spent redeveloping Windsor Park. It should have been flattened instead.”

Provan was in the Scotland squad that drew 0-0 at Windsor Park in 1981 to qualify for the World Cup Finals in Spain.

Linfield will have to close a small part of the 18,000 capacity stadium for their next UEFA tie, less than 3,000 attended the Champions League qualifier against La Fiorita of San Marino.
