Jozo Simunovic has confirmed his international switch.

The Celtic defender has played for Croatia at various youth levels but has still to gain his first cap in a competitive match.

That allows him to switch over to Bosnia Herzegovina which is the nation of his parents and grandparents.

Civil war in the nineties tore the old Yugoslavia apart with Bosnia now emerging as a footballing rival to Serbia and Croatia.

Explaining his decision to The Sun Simunovic said: “I have decided to play for Bosnia and Herzegovina. My parents and my grandparents are all from Bosnia and Herzegovina.

I was contacted by national coach Mehmed Bazdarevic and after our first meeting he gave me time to think about it. I then spoke to all my family and decided to play for my country.

After that, I had several more meetings with Mehmed Bazdarevic and came to the definite decision I wanted to play for him and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

I stand by my decision and cannot wait to play for The Dragons.”

Bosnia are currently third in World Cup qualifying Group H and are realistically competing with Greece for a runners-up spot and play off place behind Belgium.

At the next international break they face Cyprus and Gibraltar before completing the qualifying campaign at home to Belgium and away to Estonia.

Last season Simunovic was one of the few players left at Lennoxtown during international breaks with Scott Sinclair and Callum McGregor the only other regulars in Brendan Rodgers’ squad left out of international football.
