Steven Whittaker is standing by his statement after refusing to TUPE to Sevco in 2012.

The former Norwich man sat alongside Steven Naismith and brough a harsh, unwelcome truth to the fans of the Ibrox club who at that time were unsure of Sevco saviour Charles Green.

Both players mentioned Sevco which as history has been rewritten by many parties, led by BBC Scotland and their obedient news and sports desks.

At the time the small minority of thinking Ibrox fans took the emotional departures of both players as another nail in the coffin lying in the liquidation crematorium.

For the vast majority of fans they waited to be told what to think and quickly fell in line with Green’s view although even the SFA awarded the players clearance to move on with no transfer fee required.

At the time Whittaker stated: “It has been really difficult time for all connected with Rangers Football Club. And this has been such a difficult decision to make. I have discussed it at great length with my wife, family and advisors and believe I have made the right decision to object to joining Sevco.”

Yesterday, after signing a two year contract with Hibs Whittaker told The Sun: “Everyone has a different opinion of what happened at Rangers and who was to blame for what.

As players we were paid to play football and that’s what we tried to concentrate on through the whole process.

It was difficult at times, but that was all we knew. Steven and I just wanted to play football — that was the be all and end all.

We took wage cuts, for example, to try and help everything come back together. We did our bit but people have different perceptions of that. We can’t change that so we’ll just need to get on with it.”

When the inevitable administration and liquidation of Sevco comes around perhaps more fans will look back and wish that they had listened to the warnings of Naismith and Whittaker rather than swear their loyalty to Mr Green for a cup of tea in the ticket queue.
