Aside from the Patrick Roberts saga the biggest issue occupying the thoughts of the Celtic support is who will form the central defence against Astana.

Injuries to Dedryck Boyata and Erik Sviatchenko have drastically altered the options with Brendan Rodgers having to look at plans C, D and beyond.

Nir Bitton looked to be settling into the role in his performances against Rosenborg and Hearts but his lack of defensive experience was exposed a couple of times against Partick Thistle.

Those incidents may sharpen his focus for the higher stakes at play against Astana or may have highlighted the biggest weakness in the Celtic side for the Kazak champions.

Kristoffer Ajer could be a direst replacement while Mikael Lustig has experience of the position with Anthony Ralston drafted at right-back.

As he takes his squad training today and tomorrow Rodgers will already know the make up of his side, he won’t have any doubts as he prepares for the match.

Surrounded by Craig Gordon, Kieran Tierney and Jozo Simunovic whoever is chosen will be able to call upon plenty of experience- the right decision will see Celtic go to Kazakhstan.
