Bobby Lennox got a sneak preview of the statue being built in his honour thanks to a dedicated group of locals in Saltcoats.

Since the turn of the year a number of fundraising events have been arranged to ensure that the furthest flung of the Lisbon Lions is properly recognised.

Lennox had to wait four years from his debut in 1961 to get his hands on his first trophy but the following nine seasons were the most successful in the history of Celtic.

Along the way he scored 273 goals for Celtic in 571 which earned him just 10 Scotland caps which included a goal at Wembley in the 3-2 success of 1967.

After his playing days ended at the age of 37 he had a spell as reserve team manager working with players such as Stevie Fulton, Gerry Creaney and Brian O’Neil.

Lennox is still a regular and popular visitor to Celtic Park and has lived all his life in Saltcoats except for a brief spell in the seventies with Houston Hurricane of the NASL.
