Decision time over Armstrong

Reports that Southampton are preparing a £3m bid for Stuart Armstrong brings the midfielder back into focus.

Attention over the last fortnight seems to have been centred on Patrick Roberts but that is also a 14 days closer to the former Dundee United man being out of contract.

Celtic have played it softly softly so far with Brendan Rodgers hoping that his relationship with the player can alter the approach of the player’s agent.

Football wise a new Celtic deal alongside a tasty signing on fee and salary above £20,000/week seems perfect for the 25 year old but there is more money down the road.

Half a dozen English clubs could pay £50,000/week on a four year contract that would set the player up for life and give him the platform of the EPL to test himself on.

They’ll argue otherwise but the signing of Olivier Ntcham was a subtle message to the Armstrong camp as well as an obvious boost to the Celtic squad.

Celtic are well covered in midfield but you can never have too many 17 goal midfielders in your squad who are equally effective in an attacking or holding role.

With three weeks left in the transfer window the big question is whether Celtic accept an offer of £3-5m or allow the player to run down his contract with little input to the team.
