Steven Gerrard has credited Brendan Rodgers with improving his game.

The former England skipper was 32 when the Irishman took charge of Liverpool and could have made life difficult for a relatively youthful manager.

Rodgers could have made a statement by side-lining Gerrard but similar to his relationship with Scott Brown the new Liverpool boss put his trust in his skipper and picked up the rewards.

Speaking to BT Sport ahead of tonight’s Celtic v Astana match Gerrard said: β€œHe (Rodgers) is top drawer, he is very slick on the training ground. He is a fantastic man manager, he makes you feel good and confident all the time.

β€œHe helped me an awful lot, people may not think that but he actually helped break my game down and changed my game so I have to give him an awful lot of credit.”

Dean Saunders and Steve McManaman were equally as complimentary about Rodgers after they had watched Liverpool win 2-1 away to Hoffenheim to close in on a place in the group phase of the Champions League.

Tonight’s Champions League Play Off gives an English audience the chance to update themselves with the progress that Rodgers is making at Celtic.

With Jurgen Klopp making no real inroads towards taking the Premier League title to Anfield there is a growing appreciation of the work that Rodgers did during his spell in charge.

In every comparison between Rodgers and Klopp the Irishman comes out on top but as the second anniversary of his appointment approaches there is very little criticism of the former Borussia Dortmund boss.
