Brendan Rodgers was keen to play down speculation that Patrick Roberts is on his way to Celtic.

The hoops boss is still looking to add to his squad but isn’t prepared to add to the speculation that the winger was set to return to Glasgow.

From Monday evening speculation has been converted to expectation that Roberts was bound for Celtic following a successful 18 month loan that ended in May.

Answering the Roberts question following the 5-0 win over Kilmarock Rodgers told The Sun: “As we sit here now, there is nothing to add to what has been said over the last couple of days.

Pat is a Manchester City player, he spent his pre-season there and if there are developments to come out of City then we would be hugely interested in him.

He is a big talent and between now and the end of the market Patrick and Manchester City will decide where it is he can go, and the player will have big say in where is best for his development this coming season.”

Roberts had been linked with a move to Nice on Monday but after the French side made two signings before the deadline for the Champions League play-off round that prospect appeared to die off.

A wild-card signing can be added before 11pm on Monday with Roberts the only likely addition to Brendan’s squad.

Next Wednesday Celtic host Astana knowing that an aggregate win will bring in the best part of £30m and put the club back on the centre stage of European.
