UEFA have charged Legia Warsaw over the unfurling of an illicit banner during their Champions League qualifier with Maribor.

Before the kick-off the home support formed an incredible tifo display that marked the 73rd anniversary of the Warsaw Uprising.

Although Legia have been serial offenders on many fronts over recent seasons the tifo display was praised by fans throughout football.

UEFA’s opposition to any sort of political expression is well known with Legia set to find out the consequences at the Disciplinary Meeting on August 17.

This afternoon UEFA announced: “Disciplinary proceedings have been opened following the UEFA Champions League third qualifying round second leg match between Legia Warszawa and FC Astana (1-0), played on 2 August in Poland.

Charges against Legia Warszawa:

• Stairways blocked – Art. 38 of the UEFA Safety and Security Regulations
• Illicit banner – Art. 16 (2) of the UEFA Disciplinary Regulations

Last season violence inside the stadium in a match against Borussia Dortmund resulted in Legia having to play Real Madrid behind closed doors.

In 2014 Legia fell foul of UEFA by fielding an ineligible player in a 2-0 win over Celtic and had the results switched to a 3-0 defeat allowing Celtic to progress through to the play-off stage of the Champions League with Legia dropping into the Europa League play-off.
