Tom Rogic faces a nightmare trip to Syria to keep his World Cup dream alive.

On Tuesday night Australian time the Socceroos beat Thailand 2-1 but as they wake up this morning news of Saudi Arabia’s 1-0 win over Japan means that Australia have finished in third place missing out on an automatic place in Russia.

Next month they’ll face a two legged play off against Syria with the winner of that going through for a final play-off against the nation that finishes fourth in CONCACAF.

While Celtic prepare for Champions League qualifiers Rogic will be globe trotting in his mission to help his nation through to the World Cup Finals.

Australia were anticipating beating Thailand by a few goals to make up the two goal difference to Saudi Arabia but had to wait until the 86th minute to get the winner against Thailand.

That left the Saudi’s needing any type of win to take second place on goal difference with a 63rd minute winner from Fahad Al Muwallad booking their place in Russia.
