Ally McCoist believes that Sevco are light years behind Celtic.

Five years ago McCoist led the club into their first ever season backed by the millions raised by Charles Green and ready for a new start as they romped to the Third Division title despite defeats from Stirling Albion, Annan Athletic and Peterhead.

Season three of the journey proved a step up too far for the former Question of Sport skipper who activated a clause in his contract that doubled his salary when he went on gardening leave.

No further management offers have been received with McCoist now rebuilding his media career with a 6am start on Alan Brazil’s Breakfast Show on TalkSPORT.

Asked by Brazil if the SPFL would be a one horse race he admitted: “You bet it is.

Certainly in terms of catching Celtic absolutely not enough progress, no where near it. Celtic looks definitely light years ahead.”

Turning quickly to a subject more comfortable for him McCoist added: “I was interested to see what Celtic would do in the market because I think the vast majority of us will think that Celtic will win the league comfortably.

But the Champions League is the big one, they’ve got a brilliant draw. Will anybody fancy Celtic to beat PSG or Bayern Munich- Probably not but they certainly have a realistic chance of finishing third in the group and going into the Europa League.”

Despite McCoist’s pessimism Sevco were the biggest spenders in the SPFL during the transfer window with an estimated £10m spent on new stars.

Most of that money was spent in the Mexican market with the club unable to raise the £1m asking fee for Jamie Walker of Hearts.
