Celtic’s Champions League hopes have been given a major boost with Scotland failing to reach the play-off’s for the 2018 World Cup Finals in Russia.

A win would have given the SFA runners-up spot behind England but a 2-2 draw in Slovenia, who had nothing to play for, left Scotland in third place.

With the play-off dates set for November 9-14 Brendan Rodgers’ squad will enjoy a fortnight’s break between the SPFL trips to St Johnstone and Ross County.

Those dates fall between the home match with Bayern Munich and the away trip to Paris Saint Germain giving players like Craig Gordon, Kieran Tierney and Leigh Griffiths a much needed rest.

Over the last two international breaks seven Celtic players have been included in Gordon Strachan’s squads.

It looked promising for Scotland when Griffiths gave them the lead in the first half but a second half double from Roman Bezjak killed off any hopes of a play-off place with Slovakia finishing in second place.

Scotland pulled a goal back through Robert Snodgrass in the 87th minute but the game ended 2-2 with the Tartan Army staying behind to salute their heroes for another failure after the final whistle.

Stewart Regan is the chief executive of the SFA, Alan McRae is the president, Campbell Ogilvie is a former SFA President.
