McLeish on call

Alex McLeish is hovering over his phone waiting for a call from the SFA.

The man that walked away from the Scotland job in 2007 hasn’t had a management job in the UK for five years and has recently been touting himself for jobs at Sevco and Birmingham.

It seems that the man that picked up a £1.7m EBT in order to prevent Celtic winning trophies is very anxious to return to any of his former jobs even if the Ibrox gig has changed considerably from the tax free days that he used to enjoy.

Gordon Strachan’s departure has thrown the doors to Hampden open again and while McLeish won’t apply he is happy to let various media outlets know of his availability.

It was a short spell but it was a really exciting time,” he told the Evening Times about his first stint as Scotland boss. “It would be great to think the next coach or manager could get Scotland to a major finals. It is going to happen someday.

I felt when I took it last time around was I ready for international football?

I used to think it was older coaches who go down that route but at that time it was trendy for young coaches, there was Marco van Basten, Jurgen Klinnsmann and there were three or four others worldwide.

Of course, the thing is when they actually call you then it is hard to say no.”

Under Stewart Regan the SFA have failed to even reach the play-offs for the last four international tournament but after dismissing Strachan Regan claimed that it was a results driven business, but apparently not for the chief executive.
