Steve Davis thinks that it ‘may take a couple of years of investment’ for Sevco to catch up with Celtic!

The Southampton midfielder apparently still keeps an eye on Scottish football despite walking out on a TUPE deal in 2012 after refusing to switch to the tribute act set up by Charles Green.

After taking an extra year to reach the top flight Sevco finished 39 points behind Celtic last season with no sign that they are getting any closer to Brendan Rodgers’ side.

Last week’s accounts explained that further losses are expected with the next manager left to try and flog the duds accumulated by Pedro Caixinha and Mark Warburton if he wants to go into the January transfer market.

The truth and reality need to be avoided at all costs with Davis delivering an upbeat message in the Daily Record following the ‘couple of years to compete’ message first used in 2012.

Davis said: “There is obviously that gap between themselves and Celtic at the moment and it may take a couple of years of investment but ultimately the demands of Rangers with their stature means they must challenge for trophies and they have to do it season in, season out.

With my experience there it is definitely an added bonus if a manager has that background where they know the club because Rangers and Celtic are two clubs that are like no others.

You think of the demands of both clubs, the pressure and that every single move that anyone makes is either criticised or praised.

If you have that experience it definitely gives you a foothold there and you know how to deal with certain situations. But for me it is not the most important thing.

The most important thing is to get a manager in there that is going to set the team up well, get the players all playing in the right method and have them well prepared and having everyone buying into making the team successful again.”

Twelve days after dismissing Pedro Caixinha Sevco appear no closer to appointing a new manager and seem prepared to let Graham Murty and Kenny Miller remain in charge until the next batch of bad results.
