Carlos Pena and Eduardo Herrera have been offered a World Cup lifeline.

The Sevco duo have had a disastrous season and are currently as close to the Mexican national side as Jordan Rossiter is to playing for Gareth Southgate’s three lions.

Pena and Herrera haven’t been near a full cap in the last two years but were billed as international aces when they moved to Ibrox in the summer for a combined fee of £4.5m.

With Pedro Caixinha departed and waiting for his pay off the Mexican duo face an uncertain future at club level.

Mexico as usual qualified for the World Cup Finals in Russia with international boss Juan Carlos Osorio keeping the door open for the highly paid Ibrox stars.

I follow all Mexicans abroad who can be a part of the national team and that includes Pena and Herrera at Rangers,” he told The Sun.

I believe as long as they can be influential at their club, they have a high chance of being in the squad.”

Pena has missed the two post Pedro fixtures with a mystery injury while Herrera managed a three minute appearance against Hearts.

According to a report earlier in the week in the Daily Record Pena and Herrera are picking up a combined wage of £40,000/week.

Mexico have friendlies against Belgium and Poland this week.
