Souness the untouchable

In May 2012 Mark Daly came up with some fantastic information on the great Rangers tax swindle- former manager Graeme Souness had been paid a £30,000 EBT while managing Blackburn Rovers.

While managing the English side Barry Ferguson, Tugay and Lorenzo Amoruso were signed from Rangers, who were owned by Dave Murray

As well as the developing story of Rangers heading to liquidation the BBC had a massive football story on it’s hands.

There has long been suspicions about the money that heads out of football through transfer deals, middle men, agents and advisors make a small fortune for very little outlay.

Strangely BBC Scotland didn’t touch it.

Down south Alex Ferguson and Sam Allardyce refused to speak to the BBC after exposing some dubious dealings involving family members making a very nice living out of the game.

Remember Mike Phelan and others being interviewed by Match of the Day? BBC stuck by their guns and ‘suffered’ the silence of top managers for years.

Having exposed Souness in 2012 what did BBC Scotland do with the former Rangers (IL) manager?

They provided him with the red carpet treatment giving him a ten minute free commercial for his book which was widely trailed across their sports programmes.

Just as well Souness wasn’t listed in the Paradise Papers regarding the Swiss Tax authorities.
