Desperate Sunderland have Ally McCoist on the short list to replace Simon Grayson.

The Championship side haven’t won a home game during 2017 with Grayson dismissed in the tunnel after Tuesday’s 3-3 draw at home to Bolton.

Former Rangers (IL) supremo Martin Bain sacked Davie Moyes earlier this year with the Daily Mail linking McCoist to the vacancy.

Since electing to go on gardening leave in December 2014 following a Challenge Cup semi-final defeat at Alloa McCoist hasn’t been involved in management.

With a string of lucrative media jobs it’s unlikely that he’d be prepared to give them up for a club where managers barely last a year.

Sam Allardyce, Dick Advocaat, Gus Poyet and Paolo di Canio have all had short spells in charge at the Stadium of Light without being able to bring any sort of sustained success.

Another former boss Peter Reid is the bookies favourite to take over from Grayson.
