Craig Bellamy’s u-turn

Three months after claiming that no one in England cared about Brendan Rodgers’ success at Celtic Craig Bellamy believes that the Irishman could be the next Chelsea boss!

Like many south of the border the Welshman is happy to run down anything achieved outside of the English Premier League while talking up the achievements of Bournemouth, Swansea, Watford or Stoke.

With Paul Clement becoming the latest casualty of the EPL demands there is an almost constant search underway for the next managerial appointment while the Sack Race is closely followed.

Rodgers recently spoke about the six week cycle that managers are on in the EPL while he enjoys putting together longer term plans to push Celtic on further in Europe and domestically.

Bellamy is among the favourites to become the next manager of Wales and is a regular pundit on Sky Sports.

Speculating on what may happen if Chelsea sack Antonio Conte Bellamy told said: “If he goes at the end of the year, then me personally, if I’ve spent all this money on youth players and I want to see them starting to get into the first team, there would be no better manager out there for me than Brendan Rodgers to be able to do that.

He’s been at Chelsea’s youth system, he’s been part of that football club. He’s helped develop a lot of players who have gone on to do well elsewhere who have come from Chelsea’s youth ranks.

He plays good football. He plays an attractive style of football which would please [Roman] Abramovich.”

It seems to be quite an about turn by the former Celtic and Liverpool striker, three months ago he was quick to dismiss the success that Rodgers has brought to the hoops.

On his Paddy Power blog he wrote: “Brendan Rodgers couldn’t have done any more than he did with Celtic last season. His reputation as a great coach is there, but getting another top job in the Premier League might be difficult for him. Mainly because – and I found this out during my time in Scotland – it doesn’t matter what you do up there – no one cares.

I had more offers in January, before I went to Celtic, than I did when I finished my time up there the following summer.

That’s because once you went up to Scotland nobody in England gave a damn what you did up there. If you do well up there, it’s a case of ‘so you should’. I just didn’t feel it mattered to anyone down south.”
