End of the road?

It looks like Brendan Rodgers has called time up on Jozo Simunovic and Dedryck Boyata.

Celtic’s first choice central defensive partnership has become increasingly error prone with Rodgers also concerned about the availability of central defenders hampered by injuries.

Some of the goals that have been lost recently could be put down to other factors but all four goals scored today by Hearts were started by Celtic errors.

Reflecting on the match Rodgers told STV Sport: “Defensively we struggled. Hearts played a direct game which is fine and we failed to cope with Lafferty in the first period.

“He gave our two centre-halves problems and you have to defend well to win a game. It is in the past now. We have to hit the reset button.”

When Kyle Lafferty is giving you problems it’s unlikely that you are going to be up to the standards that Rodgers is looking to attain.

A year ago Erik Sviatchenko appeared to be the first pick central defender but during the last 12 months the Dane has slipped to fourth or fifth choice and is likely to move on in January.

Marvin Commper is expected to be signed from RB Leipzig once the transfer window opens with Rodgers hoping to bring in another central defender during January.
