Stewart Milne’s biggest week

Stewart Milne this week faces the toughest test of his reign at Pittodrie.

Ten days ago the Aberdeen chairman thought he had put the Derek McInnes to Ibrox story to bed during an interview with the club TV channel, a view that was endorsed by his manager the following day.

After a few days respite and Alex McLeish briefly becoming favourite for the job the spotlight has returned firmly onto McInnes.

Not since Craig Whyte was unearthed as a billionaire in November 2011 has there been such a united front presented across all sectors of the media.

There seems little doubt that McInnes is set to move to Ibrox this week unless the actions of the last six weeks was simply to unsettle Aberdeen and deliver six points to Sevco.

If/when an approach is made for McInnes Milne has some major decisions to make.

If his statement to Aberdeen TV was genuine then he can nail the story dead by saying that the issue has been discussed and McInnes isn’t interested in talking to Sevco.

Should he do that he then has to monitor the reaction of his manager, since Pedro Caixinha was sacked Aberdeen’s form has nose dived.

If McInnes shows any interest in talking to Sevco his reign at Pittodrie is over. The fans who have looked on over the last month won’t tolerate someone in their dug out with one eye on Ibrox.

Milne will then have a couple of options, bank the compensation money and capitulate or put his manager on gardening leave and regain the backing of his supporters.

As recent form has shown the SPFL and SFA will show no interest in one member undermining another. The tweet from Ladbrokes yesterday explained as much.

The spotlight is on Aberdeen and their chairman this week, it’s not really a time for Milne to move on for the good of Scottish football.

Aberdeen’s AGM takes place on December 18.
