The Rogic ‘goal’

The quality of Scottish football match officials was highlighted again during Celtic’s 5-1 win over Motherwell.

The Fir Park side had spent the five days prior to the match squealing about Celtic penalties even though it seemed at least one of them was beyond question.

Speaking yesterday after his side’s 5-1 win over Motherwell Brendan Rodgers said that both awards were soft although clearly penalties.

The Celtic boss didn’t comment on the Rogic ‘goal’ but no doubt if it had been at the other end all manner of accusations would have been made.

Even while getting a decision right the referee and his assistant manage to cause confusion throughout the stadium.

While Rogic looks offside when he receives the ball the linesmen never flagged as the Australian went through to put the ball in the net.

What happened next appears to be of Dougie-Dougie proportions.

Clancy always appears hesitant, as if he knows that he is in the wrong. With the ball on the centre circle and the Motherwell players ready to kick-off suddenly the ball is called back and the visitors have a free kick.

The assistant never seemed to move, he didn’t put his flag up and never moved towards the centre circle.

With Celtic emphatic winners little will be said, just as well Clancy wasn’t on duty last Sunday at the Betfred Cup Final.
