Gordon Strachan has told the SFA to ditch Hampden.

The current contract between the SFA and the Glasgow stadium runs out in 2020 with a lot of lobbying to take matches elsewhere.

Murrayfield can offer a larger capacity, Celtic Park has the best atmosphere in Europe while games at Ibrox can give Sevco a cash boost and the illusion of being in the big time

Strachan took charge of Scotland at various venues and feels that there are better options for hosting big matches.

Asked about staging future internationals at Hampden the former Scotland boss was emphatic in his reply.

No, it’s done, it’s beat, it’s Sophia Loren,” he told The Sun. “We used to think she was the best-looking woman we had ever seen, but would I like to go out with her just now?

Listen, I’ll answer it this way. The best atmosphere we ever had — apart from the England game — was for games at Celtic Park and Ibrox.

The atmosphere in both of those grounds was brilliant when we played Georgia and the Republic of Ireland.

Then, if we’d thought about it, it might have been better to take the likes of Lithuania to a smaller place like Tynecastle, Pittodrie or Easter Road, where the crowd would be on top of these guys.

I think that would work for Scotland. I think that would be far better for the players.

The atmosphere inside those grounds, when they are packed out, would be magnificent.”

Hampden will host matches at the 2020 European Championships but faces an uncertain future afterwards.

The stadium has a complex ownership involving Queens Park and the football authorities following funding of the new South Stand.

Former Celtic owner Fergus McCann was recently critical of the case for Hampden, highlighting the terms that Celtic had to use the stadium during the 94/95 season as Celtic Park was redeveloped.
