Erik Sviatchenko has admitted that he’d rather play in England than return to Denmark.

After being told by Brendan Rodgers that he could move on the defender has been strongly linked with a move to FC Copenhagen.

The Danish champions would be at full stretch trying to match the wages on offer in England with Sviatchenko hoping that he can clinch a move.

Speaking to The Sun he admitted: “Copenhagen are a big club so I don’t want to rule anything out – but the priority for me is to stay abroad.

I feel that I have a lot to contribute and it’s an exciting challenge to be abroad compared to the Super League.

I can see myself at a Championship club, for example. It’s a bold league where there are a lot of cool matches. It could also be a springboard for the Premier League.

I’m 26. I’m on my way to my best football age and I want to play somewhere where I can get responsibility.”

A year ago Leicester were linked with a move for Sviatchenko but that interest hasn’t resurfaced.

Celtic’s links with Southampton have created speculation that he could follow in the footsteps of Virgil van Dijk but so far there has been no definite offers for the defender.

Since January last year the 26-year-old has fallen out of the first team picture at Celtic and hasn’t been involved since picking up an injury away to Rosenborg at the start of August.
