The new look Celtic defence

Since the goals flew in during the Champions League it became obvious that the Celtic defence needs reshaped.

Various partnerships and formations were tried without really being satisfactory, even with his coaching skills it’s hard to see the current defenders being transformed into a unit as impressive as other areas of the team.

When the Revolving Door was mentioned at the weekend it’s clear that the emphasis will be at the back with Brendan Rodgers on record about his desire to improve that area of the team.

A 30-year-old Kolo Toure would have been welcome but the wage bill for that player would blow the budget way off course.

No one would be too surprised if Erik Sviatchenko and Jozo Simunovic left this month while it’s been all over for some time for Cristian Gamboa.

Slowly a new look defence has been evolving with Kris Ajer the most obvious component. The young Norwegian has played no small part in a run of four consecutive clean sheets and is now the man in possession.

The full picture will unravel over the next few weeks, by the time the transfer window closes there could be a brand new look across the back four.

ANTHONY RALSTON

Has been out injured since September but signed a new long term deal last week.

From almost as soon as he arrived at Celtic Brendan Rodgers has been keen to push and develop the teenager.

His physique is perfect for the type of game that the Celtic boss wants to play, the experience of facing Neymar has him in good stead.

Once he gets a chance he just needs to ‘do a Tierney’ and nail down his place at right back.

KRIS AJER

He could have wobbled after a tough night in Astana but has taken that experience and put it to good use.

Four games doesn’t make a player but after his time at Kilmarnock and experience in Norway he looks as ready as he’s ever been for top team action.

Ajer looks like he is learning fast on the job, rather than go out elsewhere on loan a run in the Celtic first team is the best way to develop his game.

MARVIN COMPPER

Rarely has so much been expected of a new signing.

If it wasn’t for his birth certificate he’d be welcomed universally but if Rodgers can get two or three seasons out of the German it will be a brilliant piece of business.

As well as his own game to bring to the side Compper will have a mentor role to fill alongside his younger colleagues.

The background reports seem promising but it’s only once we see him play and his impact on the team that we’ll know if the reality lives up to the billing.

KIERAN TIERNEY

Even at the age of 20 there is no allowance given for KT’s youth.

With over 100 games, many of them in Europe there’s not much that will come as a surprise after a crash course on what is needed to be a Celtic player.

Relatively speaking he could be the second most experienced player in the defence, having captained club and country during 2017 a lot will be expected of KT in the new year- he’ll never let anyone down.
