Ally McCoist has told Sevco fans to lighten up after Josh Windass told them to shut it after scoring at Partick Thistle.

The former Accrington starlet has been in outstanding form since Graeme Murty took over as caretaker boss helping the Ibrox club into third place in the Premiership as well as third in the highly prestigious Florida Cup.

A below par performance in the 2-1 home defeat from Hibs didn’t go down well with the on-line poison normally reserved for Neil Lennon being directed towards Windass.

Murty claimed the Arsene Wenger opt out of not seeing the gesture at Fihill but did promise to review the incident and speak to the player about how to respect the fans.

McCoist took plenty of abuse as a player and manager from the Ibrox faithful and has urged them to back Windass.

Speaking on his TalkSPORT show on Thursday night he said: “We’re talking about somebody here who went ‘shush’.

He didn’t make any real gestures that would end him up in Stewart Street police station for a fortnight!

He’s told the fans to shush. So come on fans, I meant lighten up a little bit, it’s a shush!”

As Sevco manager McCoist led the club to cup defeats against Queen of the South, Forfar, Raith Rovers and Alloa Athletic, as Rangers (IL) manager he crashed out of Europe to Malmo and Maribor with the club put into liquidation within a year of those defeats.
