Thirteen months ago Joey Barton faces up to one of the biggest matches of his nondescript and trophyless career.

Lincoln City at home was the dream tie for Burnley as they eyes up a place in the last eight of the FA Cup and a chance for their journeymen to finally win something worthwhile.

With their focus on winning promotion to the EFL Lincoln looked forward to their day out, 90 minutes in the minor spotlight cast by Turf Moor before returning to the Football Conference.

With the clock ticking down on his career and Lincoln leading 1-0 even by Barton’s standards what he did was low.

Sure he didn’t stub a cigar out in a team-mates eye or go on the rampage on route to a summer stint in Strangeways Prison but it doesn’t get much lower for a Premier League star than to feign injury to get a non-league player sent off.

It does actually get lower, when your antics are highlighted on social media and brought up any time he gets on his high horse to force his opinion on players that have actually won medals and played in the Champions League.
