Provan’s Walter warning

Davie Provan has warned Sevco fans that they’ll be getting another project manager in the summer.

Sam Allardyce, Roberto Martinez and Sean Dyche are regularly discussed on Ibrox fan forums with many supporters believing that they just require a high profile- and highly paid- manager to come in and ‘do a Brendan Rodgers’.

With the company requiring a loan from Close Brothers to get through to the end of the season it would be a miracle if they can attract a decent new boss and provide him with the funds to compete with Celtic.

Walter Smith remains the dream appointment for many fans but without tax scams the former Ibrox boss knows that he has no chance of success.

Scotland were recently liked with taking Smith out of retirement with Provan spelling out the significance of that move to the deluded Ibrox fans.

Writing in The Sun Provan explained: “The most damning indictment of that job right now is that Walter Smith WON’T take it.

You can bet Gers directors have been on their knees begging Smith to return to the dugout.

Yet a Rangers icon — who recently expressed interest in the Scotland job — won’t return to the club he loves? What does that tell you?

This is the guy who took a bang average Rangers squad to a European final ten years ago.

If Smith thought there was half a chance of challenging Celtic he’d have thrown his lot in.

If he believed he could have stopped Celtic’s ten-in-a-row bandwagon he would have put the cardigan on again.

Instead, he’s had the savvy to see history is repeating itself. When Smith was gearing up for Gers’ tilt at a seventh successive league title in the summer of 1994, Tommy Burns was appointed Celtic’s fourth manager in five years.

Before, the Celtic job was a poisoned chalice. Novice coach Liam Brady had succeeded Billy McNeill, before Lou Macari swapped the second tier of English football for Glasgow.

While Smith had the likes of Trevor Steven, Alexei Mikhailitchenko, Mark Hateley and Ian Durrant in his dressing room, Macari had Rudi Vata, Paul Byrne, Wayne Biggins and Carl Muggleton.

But for Fergus McCann, Rangers would have made ten-in-a-row without breaking sweat.

Instead, McCann completed the most successful share issue in British football history to re-boot the club. Three years later, Wim Jansen had the players to stop Rangers reaching the magic ten.

But Rangers do not have a McCann or Dermot Desmond of their own. Despite the promises that saw Dave King win control, Rangers don’t have the means to lay a glove on Celtic.

Their chance disappeared when they chased billionaire Mike Ashley down Edmiston Drive.”

Smith was back at Ibrox yesterday for a ‘charity’ match but has kept a dignified distance from a permanent return to the dug out.
