The Daily Record has turned to a 75-year-old who has been out of management half of his life to convince Brendan Rodgers to quit Celtic.

Terry Neill is a name that most fans under 30 won’t have heard of.

The Irishman has the fairly unique distinction of having managed Spurs and Arsenal but hasn’t been near a dug out since 1983, his last major signing was to take Charlie Nicholas from Celtic to Highbury.

Rodgers will be respectful of the CV of a fellow Irishman but is unlikely to be hanging on to the opinions of someone that last managed when the current Celtic boss was at primary school.

Speaking to the Daily Record Neill said: “I can understand why Brendan has been linked to the Arsenal job because he has done a smashing job at Celtic.

Rodgers has many qualities and has ticked most of the boxes in terms of his managerial abilities.

Some people may say it is one of the easier jobs but nothing is easy in football management. You still have to go and do the business. He has done brilliantly there and I’m delighted for him.

He has united the club, not just in terms of the players, but the entire club with the board and the supporters.

It looks like they are going to win the Scottish Premiership title again and possibly go on and win another treble.

That’s impressive. I would have to say managing in Scotland is not the same as managing in ?the Premier League or Germany or Spain or Italy though.”

As recently as Sunday Rodgers explained his reasons for working at Celtic rather than being dazzled by the glamour and hype of the English Premier League.

With an annual casualty rate of close to 50% the Irishman was one of those victims at Liverpool and wants to develop through his own team at Celtic rather than work in a six week cycle of results.
